Four Seasons Sultanahmet, Istanbul Turkey

Of the many prison turned hotels around the globe, the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet in Istanbul Turkey which used to be a prison back just over a century ago is probably the most luxurious yet “authentically prison”.

Sultanahmet Prison, or Sultanahmet Cezaevi in Turkish, began construction in 1918, a prime example of Turkish neoclassical architecture with an emphasis on pointed arches, ornate tiles, dramatic domes and towers. The prison’s creator was Mimar Kemaleddin Bey, a prominent architect of the period and father of the composer Ilhan Mimaroglu. Bey’s portrait can currently be seen on 2009 versions of the Turkish 20-lira banknote.

The first jail of its kind in Istanbul, Sultanahmet Prison was located next to the city courthouse. Along with the usual male prisoners, women and youths were occasionally detained here, along with a number of famous artists and political figures, including Mihri Belli, a communist leader; Orhan Kemal, a novelist; and Aziz Nesin, a controversial humourist who published over 100 books.

There are still elements of the original prison structure throughout the hotel such as hand-painted tiles in the lobby and reception areas as the floor tiles by the elevators, original wooden doors and arched hallways and marble pillars, some with carvings by inmates.

Liberty Hotel, Offenburg Germany

This building was a place where freedom was lost. Building work began in 1840 and subsequently this was a place where freedom was lost, somewhere free-thinking people were imprisoned precisely because of their free spirit. The first prisoners in this former penal institution were the visionaries and pioneers of freedom and democracy in Germany: the Baden revolutionaries.

Now a member of Design Hotels, Liberty Hotel gave a great deal of thought as to how they could remodel and find a new use for this old building, while respecting its history with a caring and sensitive approach. Plans and designs were developed, then redeveloped and started over from scratch – until the right formula were found. With a passion for detail, new life is given into this huge, solid walls, bringing the old and the new together in a wonderful way. Oh, the hotel restaurant Wasser & Brot is not to be missed.

Malmaison Oxford, UK

Housed in a former prison, the Malmaison Oxford is a boutique hotel in Oxford city centre with 95 beautifully styled rooms and suites that are packed with some of the best creature comforts that come to mind. The rooms here are rather more spacious than your average jail cell and come complete with luxurious beds, super-fast Wi-Fi, and power drench showers with all the comforting amenities you would expect from a luxury hotel in Oxford city centre.

Langholmen Hotel, Sweden

Near Sodermalm in Stockholm lies the verdant island Langholmen where an old prison was transformed into a unique, inviting and exciting hotel. The reception with a ”mini café” and a small shop is open day and night. There is also a nice pub, and a really good inn. The renovated cells offer all amenities you could think of and last but not least… a captivating charm. Langholmen is full of rich history marked by the old prison which was closed down in 1975.

Hotel Katajanokka, Finland

The Katajanokka hotel was built into a former prison, a legacy that the hotel is careful to maintain—albeit in a five-star fashion, which certainly wasn’t the case when it was opened. Back when it was a functional prison, even attempting to look out one of the windows, set high up in the wall, could result in a three-day stint in the isolation cell.

Built in 1837 during the Russian occupation of Finland, Katajanokka was predominantly used as a processing centre—with the majority of prisoners serving out their sentences elsewhere. However, overcrowding and dilapidated conditions were so bad that Amnesty International took notice, and forced its closure in 2002. Despite how dire the conditions became, many of the former staff and inmates have returned to take the in-house hotel tours to see what became of their former cells/workplace.
